How to play

  1. Choose cats or dogs, then select two-player or vs-computer mode.
  2. On your turn, tap a column to drop your piece — it falls to the lowest available row.
  3. Be the first to line up four of your pieces in a row — horizontally, vertically, or diagonally — to win.
  4. The grid has 7 columns and 6 rows. If it fills completely with no winner, the game is a draw.

Tips

  • Control the middle columns. Pieces there connect in more directions than pieces near the edges.
  • Stack vertically on purpose to threaten a column win — opponents often miss vertical threats while watching the rows.
  • Create a double threat: two ways to win at once. Your opponent can only block one.

About this game

Hop the Drop is our version of Connect Four, the classic strategy game invented in 1974 by Howard Wexler and Ned Strongin. It became a board game bestseller after Milton Bradley published it that year, and it has been a staple of family games rooms ever since. The vertical-falling mechanic adds a layer of physics-based strategy that pure grid games lack: you can only place pieces at the bottom of a column, so planning ahead means thinking about gravity as well as lines. We have swapped the traditional red-and-yellow discs for cats and dogs to keep things fun and friendly for younger players.
